Secret Lores

Courtier

  • Secret Art of Intrigue
  • The Story of Self
    • Discovery Skill: Awareness
    • Discovering Passions: If you have this Lore, and you notice an interesting pattern of emotional behavior, you can make an Awareness roll to discover (ie. declare) that it is a Passion. You can only make this roll once for any given set of observations – if you fail, you have to wait for more displays of emotion before you can try again. If Wise-Eyed Mandarin Ling has already studied the target and found no passion, it is doubtful any lesser Courtiers would succeed!
      • On a Standard Success, you have found a Trivial Passion Weakness.
      • On a Critical Success, you can discover a Minor Passion Weakness or a Trivial Passion Hyperactivity.
      • You pick the Recovery of the Condition. It’s either equal to the roll that Discovered it, or a set number depending on its Intensity: Hard (30) for a Trivial Condition, or Memorable (40) for a Minor or Major Condition.
      • You can choose between [Duration 5, Interval 1 Scene] or [Duration 1, Interval 1 Story].
      • As usual, the Sage stipulates one circumstance in which the Condition fades by itself.
    • Discovering Inspirations: Just as with Passions, Inspirations can be created by Courtiers or develop spontaneously in people who focus a lot on duty and codes of behavior. This uses the same detection mechanics as discovering Passions, with Difficulties modified by the chart below:
      • The character has a rating of 0 in the associated Virtue: +10
      • The character has a rating of 1-2 in the associated Virtue: 0
      • The character has a rating of 3-4in the associated Virtue: -10
      • The character has a rating of 5 in the associated Virtue and/or the Sage has already decided that there is at least a Minor Condition there: -15
      • On a Standard Success, you Discover a Trivial Inspiration Hyperactivity.
      • On a Critical Success, you Discover a Minor Inspiration Hyperactivity or a Trivial Inspiration Weakness.
  • Controlling Passions
    • Manipulation Skill: Inspire
    • Resist Skill: Confidence
    • Inflaming and Soothing Passions: To inflame or soothe a Passion, roll Inspire +Toolset Bonuses vs the Recovery of the Condition. Inflaming or soothing a condition moves its Recovery Difficulty one step.

  • Combat Conditions
    • Everyone with this Lore can recognize an existing Combat Condition by making a Tactics roll at the urging of the Sage while out of combat, and as a deliberate Minor Tactics Action inside of it. The Difficulty is set by the Sage, but the benchmarks should be 30 for a Minor Condition and only 20 to recognize a Major one.

The target can oppose this with Stealth or Tactics.

  • Status 2: Blizzard Wolves
  • 3 Technique: Boundless Yin Arsenal
  • 5 Fortune: You have an unusually strong Water-based Chi deviation associated with coldness, snow and ice. You might have white skin and eyes, your skin radiating cold. You might give off a chill aura, making people shiver and frosting over your surroundings whenever you spend Chi. You might have an utterly cold and unattached personality. In either case, you will certainly have an interesting life and be easy to recognize. You may respire two points of Water Chi instead of one at the end of the round.

Appearance

Xue Bai is instantly recognizable. His skin and hair are inhumanly white, as well as his irises. As if infused with the very essence of ice and snow, his presence is noticeably and literally chilling, and his touch has been known to leave a light frost upon expending chi. He is 5’2 and light of build, and constantly speaks in an apathetic and impassive tone; deviating only slightly when he mocks or taunts others. His clothing, while having changed somewhat following his initial introduction to the more modern world, still favors elements of home: leather is common, and fur or bone accents aren’t unusual. He also wears a belt with a large clay jug at his hip; while many assume it contains alcohol of some sort, he’s never appeared inebriated.

History

Son of the current chief of Snow Gift, Northern Ox. His birth was seen as a good omen and a gift of the mountain spirits; his unusual appearance taken as a strong link to the land and its protectors. Though not spared the inherent hardships and trials of northern life, he was denied nothing – few found they could match his willful determination, when status was not enough to get his way.

• Training under his father and the other warriors of Snow Gift, he learned to harness the styles of his people, and took to their efficient and brutal techniques with surprising swiftness. His cold personality and the speed with which he could transform that passive stance into one of merciless reprisal earned him his current title, and the name he uses outside of his native territory.

• At sixteen he was sent out into the wider world on a traditional rite of passage, urged by his parents to undertake the task a few years early and continue to honor his status as a gifted champion. Not content to attain a mere token of success, he set his sights higher to win a private but significant glory for his people….he would elevate himself, and settle the rivalry between Snow Gift and the Yun Clan by proving the former’s absolute superiority.

• As cold as the glacial ice of the northern mountains, The Snake of Winter’s mentality had changed little from his early youth. His experience with the outside world is quite limited, and while he is aware that these larger populations do not bend immediately to his demands, he isn’t entirely sure why this is so. This has lead to several “educational” fights, and he enjoys humiliating and toying with anyone who crosses him. Though clever and reflective, his sheltered life does make him more naive to many things, and he has certainly had several learning experiences.

• Presently, he is still striving to understand the customs and people of the land, content to gather information before charging headlong into a large confrontation with his rivals. Rumors and experiences often catch his attention. Practice and refinement of his martial skills are highly important to him, and he is eager to hone and demonstrate his prowess; while far from a short-tempered brawler, he does not shy away from a promising or entertaining challenge.
